Tracing its history to 1918 in World War I, III Corps earned the nickname 'Phantom Corps' in World War II for striking the enemy when least expected and for establishing the Remagen bridgehead into Germany. Redesignated III Armored Corps, it is a deployable tactical headquarters capable of commanding multiple divisions in a theater of operations. Headquartered at Fort Cavazos, Texas, it is a major subordinate command of U.S. Army Forces Command.
