Activated in 1940 and nicknamed 'Old Ironsides,' the 1st Armored Division was the Army's first armored division and fought in North Africa and Italy during World War II. After decades stationed in Germany during the Cold War and service in the Gulf War and Iraq, it relocated to Fort Bliss, Texas, in 2011. It is a subordinate division of III Armored Corps and one of the Army's principal heavy formations.
