First constituted in 1943 at Camp Hale, Colorado as a specialized mountain-warfare division, the 10th fought in the Apennine Mountains of Italy in World War II before being inactivated. It was reactivated as a light-infantry division at Fort Drum, New York, in 1985 and has since become one of the Army's most frequently deployed divisions, serving repeatedly in Somalia, the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan. It is a subordinate division of the XVIII Airborne Corps.
