The 22nd Special Tactics Squadron is an Air Force Special Operations Command unit stationed at the McChord Field side of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, under the 720th Special Tactics Group. It began as the 1722nd Combat Control Squadron, activated in 1984, and was redesignated the 22nd STS in 1996 after an interim period as the 62nd Combat Control Squadron. Its airmen establish airfields, control air traffic, and conduct personnel recovery, deploying to Panama, the Gulf War, Afghanistan, and Iraq; the 720th group reports directly to AFSOC after the 24th Special Operations Wing inactivated in May 2025.
